History
Nafplio, one of Greece’s oldest and most picturesque cities, boasts a rich history reflected in its unique architecture and monuments. During the Middle Ages, the city was occupied by the Franks and later the Venetians, who fortified it with structures such as Palamidi Fortress, Bourtzi, and other defensive works. Under Ottoman rule, Nafplio became an important administrative and commercial center.
During the Greek Revolution (1821-1829), Nafplio played a pivotal role as it became the first capital of the independent Greek state in 1829. The Third National Assembly was held here, and Ioannis Kapodistrias was appointed as Greece’s first governor. His assassination in Nafplio in 1831 was a significant historical event.
Nafplio evolved into a major commercial port and is now one of Greece’s most popular tourist destinations. The Old Town, with its cobblestone streets, neoclassical buildings, and traditional tavernas, attracts visitors from all over the world.
